Question: Knitting Wire and Beads?

Mother's Day Help Needed:

My mom is interested in Knitting Wire w/ Beads (to make jewelry). What specific supplies/brands should I get her? All the websites focus more on "technique" than tools perse.

Looking for helpful sites, tool recommendations, or instructional books that others have found helpful. Thank you!

Answer: I would say start with the cheap stuff. Once she's had tie to practice, then get the good stuff. Start with 28ga or 26ga wire. (In wire gauge, the higher the number, the smaller the wire.) You can get a good spool at Michaels for $2.- or $3.- easily. It has yards and yards on it, especially in the 26ga or 28ga sizes. Then, get some E beads. E beads are like seed beads only bigger. They also come in good-sized packs. She will also need almost-miniature knitting needles. Most of the bead-knitting I've seen patterns for calls for size 0 or even 00 knitting needles. Ask at your crafts supplies store, and then -- if they don't have any -- try a knitting shop (check your local phonebook) or even eBay.

If your mom doesn't use small beads for anything else already, don't forget the basic equipment needed for doing that. At a crafts supplies store, you can find compartmentalized plastic boxes with lids to store the beads. A small measuring spoon or similar scoop is handy to scoop them up out of the compartments. You may also want a small tray of some sort to spread the beads on while she's using them.

This sounds like a great present, the kind that is truly worth far more than the money you'll spend on it.
