How To Promote Home Jewelry Business

Question: How do seniors who are self-employed crafters deal with taxes?
The quagmire of federal, state and local taxes imposed on crafters discourage seniors from augmenting their pensions with products they make at home. Is the paperwork just too much? Is it necessary to hire a lawyer or tax preparer for a micro-business?

If you are a quilter, woodworker, jewelry maker, toy maker or artist, how do you cope with all these taxes? Do you think seniors, stay at home mothers and other crafters should be exempt from all these taxes to help promote self-sufficiency?
Answer: My mother ran her own sewing business out of a dedicated basement room for the whole of the 50 years she lived in this house. And she declared her income from the beginning, so that she would have a right to pay into the Canada Pension Plan, so that she might draw from it once she retired.
We read the tax laws very carefully (I helped her from my earliest teens to interpret the tax laws), and were able to claim one seventh of the cost of upkeep on the house as "business expenses" since this house has 7 rooms and the one was dedicated solely to her business. That was 1/7th of the yearly taxes, 1/7th of the hydro, 1/7th of the cost of maintaining the structure (new roof, repairs to outside walls, moisture proofing the basement) 1/7th of the heating costs (since she had to maintain the room in a warm state for her customers to try on their clothes during the process of making them). Her "taxable income" was significantly offset by these expenses, so that the actual taxes she had to pay on her income were minimal....
All I can suggest to you is to get to know your tax laws thoroughly. They are really NOT that complicated if you have a bit of math ability and common sense. And it can be beneficial for you to declare this income before you retire--earning yourself a higher old age pension as my mother did.

Jewelry Business Ideas

Question: Which is a better business to start: Web Comics or selling Body Jewelry on the Internet?
I'm looking to start a business. I've been wanting to do Web Comics for a long time, but recently I've decided that selling body jewelry online may be a good idea. I know there's a considerable amount of work required for either to be successful.
What are the pros and cons of both of these ideas? That will help me decide which to do. Thanks!
Answer: Web comics make money? Just make a jewely site that HAS web comics. They should lure people back, keep them around, or even bring them in.

At Home Jewelry Business

Question: How can someone find out if a craft product will sale, before starting a craft business?
I'd like to start an at home craft business, since my jewelry isn't really in demand right now, but I don't know how to go about finding out what people in my area will buy. The majority of people around me don't like to pay much, for anything. Any craft ideas would also be welcome. Any ideas not involving a lot of money to put into the craft would be even more helpful. Thank you.
At the moment I don't want to sell anything online. The research needs in person, if at all possible. Thank you.
The main thing I need to know right now is how to go ahead with the market research. How do I find out if people will buy whatever craft I make?
Answer: Mesa, AZ is starting a weekly Saturday crafts sale which is geared toward attracting artists as sellers. Not a flea market. The lack of market has been the problem for jewelry and craft makers. And you are correct about people refusing to pay top dollar even if the jewelry is first-class.
There is no way to find out if crafts will sell. You just take your chances in business like the rest of us..
